Grease Trap Maintenance
Program
Grease traps require bacteria to eat and consume the grease, oil, and solid organic waste
they collect. Commercial establishments use strong detergents and chemicals each day
that kill off the naturally occurring bacteria needed to perform grease trap maintenance.
When a trap does not contain sufficient bacteria to clean the wastewater, traps and main
drain lines flowing to them will become clogged, backed up, odorous, and the mantle (top
layer of trap) crusted. All these conditions provoke other plumbing problems and business
interruptions.
Harsh grease trap environments usually have a high pH range that makes adding a
bioproduct often ineffective. Liquid BioOne®’s patented formulation tolerates this harsh
environment and high pH, allowing the millions of living microorganisms suited to
consume, digest, and eliminate grease, oil, go to work to eliminate the buildup.
The most effective way to maintain a grease trap system is to set up a BioOne® autodispensing
system below the elbow pipe under the tri-compartment sink in a commercial
kitchen. BioOne® is dispensed through the pump into the main drain line that leads into
the grease trap, achieving two important functions:
1) Bacteria are release into the pipes that carry the majority of grease and oil;
therefore, the degradation process begins in the pipe where backups occur,
2) Bacteria then flow into the grease trap from this main line, where they continue
to consume organic material preventing clogs, backups and foul odors.
The strength of the wastewater in a BioOne® treated grease trap will be reduced by 75%
during the approximately 24-hour retention time. Reducing wastewater strength,
especially the levels of biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand, can
significantly lower municipal surcharge fines for commercial customers, and reduce the
need for pumping by 50%.
Directions for Use:
1) Set up a BioOne® auto-dispensing system underneath the tri-compartment sink
and insert the dispensing tube into the pipe just beyond the elbow joint.
2) Complete installation instructions provided with every auto-dispensing unit.
3) Place a 2.5 gallon container of Liquid BioOne® in the auto-dispensing system
casing; start the pump per directions.
4) Replace BioOne® 2.5 gallon container approximately every 60 days.
